The Academy Awards' 2023 Oscar nominations were revealed this morning and there weren't a lot of surprises. Most of LA Weekly and Village Voice critic's picks for best films of last year made the cut, with Everything Everywhere All At Once leading the recognitions, garnering 11 nods. Other favorites lauded by our critics that made the cut: Cate Blanchett's exquisite performance in TÁR, Bill Nighy's touching turn in Living, Brendan Fraser in The Whale, Michelle Williams' unflinching portrayal in The Fabelmans (the source of some controversy on social media due to the relatively brief screen time), and Angela Bassett's powerful appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We're happy to see one of our personal picks, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio recognized for Best Animated Film, but extremely disappointed that Brett Morgan's sublime David Bowie doc, Moonage Daydream didn't get a nomination! Mia Goth's intense performance in Pearlis also a huge oversight and at time of this writing she was trending on Twitter because of it. Entertainment media has already flooded the web with thoughts on other "snubs," so we'll cease adding to the noise and end on a positive note. After the pandemic threatened to kill the movie biz, it seems to be bouncing back strong. Sundance Film Festival, which went virtual during COVID, even came back full force this weekend. A lot of us aren't ready to step inside of theaters yet, but it's nice to know we can-- and that most of the nominated titles are available to stream now. The 95th Academy Awards, live from Hollywood, will airs on ABC on Sun., March 12. Hosted by Jimmu Kimmel, it will also be streamed on ABC.com, Hulu Live TV and YouTubeTV.
