A Few Warnings On CBD Oil & Diarrhea

Diarrhea is embarrassing, but it's a serious problem when left unaddressed. Recent surveys also suggest that diarrhea-related complaints are more common in older demographics. Therefore, it's crucial for seniors interested in taking CBD oil to understand the potential side effects associated with this cannabinoid.

As you may have already guessed, diarrhea is one of the more commonly reported reactions related to CBD oil. Although most healthy adults don't experience side effects when taking CBD, not everyone reacts to hemp in the same way. We feel it's best to arm you with knowledge on the "worst-case scenario" so you know how to respond safely and efficiently when you try CBD products.

Does CBD Trigger Diarrhea or Other Digestive Issues?

Ironically, many people use CBD to treat digestive-related problems, including irritable bowel syndrome and a lack of appetite. For some patients, CBD's anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory benefits help settle their tummy, relieve nausea, and stimulate slight hunger.

However, it's not unheard of for new patients to report experiencing diarrhea a few hours after taking CBD oil. So, what's the deal with this seeming contradiction?

Well, according to many in the CBD community, it's more likely CBD isn't the primary culprit behind these digestive complaints. Please remember that manufacturers have to mix their CBD in a carrier oil for effective transmission and absorption. Therefore, people could be having an adverse reaction to the carrier oil in their CBD extract.

For instance, there's some data that coconut-extracted MCT oil could have a laxative effect on patients. Many people on the ketogenic diet already know MCT oil is associated with stomach cramps and diarrhea at higher doses.

Another possible explanation for your digestive troubles is the quality of your CBD oil. Please remember that the FDA doesn't regulate the hemp industry, so you could be swallowing heavy metals or other toxins in low-quality CBD. For this reason, you must always work with a reputable brand that publishes third-party lab results.

Third, you have to consider your CBD dosage. It's more common to experience side effects from CBD if you take too much of this supplement. Start with a little bit of CBD oil and slowly work your way up. If you rush in with too much CBD, you're increasing your risk of reactions like diarrhea.

How Do I Tell What's Causing My CBD Digestive Issues?

If you have a nasty side effect after using CBD oil, please stop using your product immediately. Diarrhea puts you at a greater risk for dehydration, so you must focus on rehydrating with purified water or electrolyte packets. Please don't try CBD oil again until your negative symptoms have fully subsided.

When you retest your CBD oil, take a lower dose and note your response. If you get the same "queasy" reaction, you should try a different CBD product.

Feeling Sick After CBD? Speak With An MD!

If you experience bad reactions to any CBD oil, we encourage you to stop using it and speak with a physician.

Also, please remember that CBD oil can interact with prescription medications. If you're taking any OTC or doctor-approved meds, you shouldn't take CBD without a doctor's approval. Sometimes, these interactions could cause adverse reactions like digestive distress.
