Camp Flog Gnaw Recap featuring Nardwuar, WILLOW, and DAISYWORLD

As the vibrant atmosphere of the Flog Gnaw Carnival unfolded with an array of booths, games, and amazing performances, we took the opportunity to delve into the memories of some of the talented artists who graced the stage. Each artist shared their experiences of meeting the visionary who founded the carnival, Tyler, The Creator.

Amidst the bustling scene of booths, from Converse's inflatable showcase to the NFL x Starter booth with its lively games and custom jacket embroidery, the festival buzzed with energy. The NFL booth even had an appearance of its famed Lombardi Trophy that goes to the winner of the Super Bowl each year. Carnival rides and games added an extra layer of excitement, creating the perfect backdrop for the remarkable performances that echoed through the air.

Performances by artists like SZA, Kendrick Lamar & Baby Keem, Pink Pantheress, Earl Sweatshirt, and so many more rocked the massive parking lot of Dodger Stadium, transformed into a legitimate carnival for the weekend. The energy in the air was palpable, especially during Lil Yachty’s set, in which tens of thousands of fans moshed, danced, and screamed. Lil Yachty recently took to social media to admit that he actually vomited after his set due to exhaustion and fatigue from his extremely energetic set. 

WILLOW also took the stage, along with a quick surprise appearance from her brother Jaden. We got to talk to  WILLOW before her set, and we reminisced about her first encounter with Tyler at the Flog store on Fairfax. Adorned in a knitted cat hat and one of Tyler's “GOBLIN” crewnecks, 11-year-old Willow hesitated, but eventually mustered the courage to express her admiration.

Willow:

"I said ‘Bro, I just wanna say like, I really, I love you. I fuck with your shit.’ I'm like 11 at the time. I'm trying to act cool or whatever. I was gonna ask him for a picture, then I wasn't.”

After being convinced by a friend to approach Tyler for a picture, a malfunction with her 2011 iPhone ruined the photo.

“I don't know what happened, but the picture didn't come through on my phone. Like, the picture just wasn't there. So I'm just like, 'Oh, I'm just gonna bounce.' I said ‘Thank you Tyler, you’re the best.’ And as I’m walking away he goes, 'Yo, is everything cool with the picture?' And I was like, 'actually, it didn't take really.' And he was like, 'Let’s take another one.' That's the first time I met Tyler. And I wish I could show you the picture! I'm wearing a cat hat and it's a gray crew neck hoodie that just says golf on it. And, um, it was like the best day of my life *laughs*.”

Nardwuar, widely known in the music scene as one of the greatest interviewers of all time, also shared his initial meeting with Tyler. He met Tyler at SXSW in Austin, Texas, in 2011, at the dawn of Tyler’s career. Arranged through Das Racist's publicist, the interview provided the legendary Nardwuar with an opportunity to connect with Tyler and the Odd Future crew.

Nardwuar:

"Well, it was in March, 2011 at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and I did the interview with him. That was the first time I encountered him. And actually I got that interview through Das Racist’s publicist. I did an interview with Das Racist, known for the song Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell, and they arranged an interview with Tyler, The Creator. And I learned about Das Racist by listening to CITR Radio, which I volunteer for in Vancouver, Canada. 

Before interviewing Tyler himself, Nardwuar heaped praise upon him for creating Camp Flog Gnaw.

“Thank you Tyler The Creatoe for creating the Camp Flag Gnaw Carnival. It really is a carnival and it embraces all sorts of artists. It’s amazing to have sustained something for this many years.”

We also spoke to the wonderful DAISYWORLD, whose first meeting with Tyler occurred in a more intimate setting—her best friend's backyard. Performing at her band's inaugural show on January 1st, DAISYWORLD received praise from Tyler himself.

DAISYWORLD:

"The first time that I met Tyler was in my best friend's backyard. And my band was playing, I think it was our first show ever and it was on January 1st, and I met Tyler and he was like, 'That was amazing, blah, blah, blah.' And I was like, 'Oh my God. This year has had the greatest start ever.' Because I've just met this person that I'm like, the biggest fan of, and not only that, but he likes my band and he likes my singing voice. That's how I met him."

Tyler, The Creator's vision has not only created a carnival that defies conventional festival norms but has also fostered a community where artists and fans from diverse backgrounds enmesh. Thank you Tyler, for everything that you’ve done for music and LA as a whole!
