Alex Sher, an award-winning American fine art photographer, has received international recognition among critics, art investors, and collectors, for his unique underwater art works and his profound appreciation for feminine sensuality. Born in Ukraine in 1962, Sher developed a passion for photography at a young age and went on to graduate from Kyiv University in 1984. Following a significant turning point in his career during his voluntary work at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, Sher embraced his affinity for underwater photography, which has become a central focus in his artistic journey.

Throughout the years, Sher's photography has evolved, spanning from scientific-styled marine wildlife captures to figurative fine art and monochrome black and white works. His latest artistic innovation, the "Underwater Reflections" series, blurs the boundaries between the figurative and the abstract, weaving together vibrant colors, distorted and captivating forms, and mesmerizing reflections on the water's surface.

Sher's talent has been widely recognized, with his work being exhibited in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other major cities including the Louvre Museum in Paris. He has received many prestigious awards, including the 2022 Monochromatic Awards and 2022 Color Awards, both awarded by Dodho Magazine, as well as a First-Place award in both the Photography and Originality Categories at the renowned Beverly Hills Art Show in 2022. As public interest in his work continues to grow, Sher's career has been on a steady climb, establishing him as one of an exclusive number of artists whose work has crossed over into investment territory.

Alex's work has reached considerable popularity among the general public. This is evidenced by very high numbers of views, up to 10 million per video of his work sessions, on his Instagram account @alexsher.art

Alex, could you share with us how your path as a photographer started?

Alex Sher: Oh, it's been quite a journey, with many twists and turns. I actually embarked on my photography journey when I was just twelve years old. Despite eventually obtaining a degree in biology, my true passion has always been capturing moments through the lens.

I began showcasing my works in the early '90s and considered myself an emerging artist. However, it was a pivotal moment when one of my pieces was stolen from an exhibition in Kyiv. It made me realize the significant value and resonance my photographs held with the audience. From that point on, my perspective shifted, and I delved into figurative fine art, capturing models in various aquatic settings. This exploration led me to venture into different series, themes, and concepts, culminating in my latest endeavor—the "Underwater Reflections" series, where I merge the figurative with the abstract.

Photography has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.

That's an impressive path! Every successful artist has a mission, a driving force. Could you tell us a bit about yours?

Alex Sher: My mission was defined long ago, inspired by my grandmother's tales of a photographer who could make any woman beautiful through his camera lens. I aspired to be that person, hoping that one day my grandmother would say the same about me. Over the years, I've traveled the world, capturing the beauty of people and extraordinary subjects. Throughout my life's journey, I hope to hear those words: "He is a magician, he makes life beautiful with his camera."

Your artistic style is truly unique. Can you share why you chose underwater photography?

Alex Sher: I have a deep love for water. It possesses an incredible power—this secret realm that fiercely guards its dark abyss against any intruders, be it air or light. Yet, water also reveals its majestic side, releasing the elements it once held captive. When I witness a stunning beauty floating weightlessly, enveloped by shimmering bubbles, my camera takes over, capturing images almost on its own. In those moments, I find myself holding my breath, completely absorbed in the incredible experience. It's unlike anything else.

Your career and growth have been remarkable, with numerous exhibitions, art fairs, and awards. Could you tell us a bit about your journey?

Alex Sher: Certainly! I believe in developing my career across various avenues, which ultimately benefits my collectors. Each year, I actively engage in numerous group and personal projects while participating in renowned art shows and fairs like the LA Art Show and Spectrum Miami. My plans include participating in Art Basel and exploring opportunities in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, where I've been receiving increasing interest.

Additionally, I participate in grants, contests, and awards in various photography categories, ranging from fine art and monochrome to fashion, lifestyle, and portraits. My work has gained substantial attention from both the US and international media, contributing to a growing interest among art collectors worldwide. Since 2020, my sales have doubled annually, reflecting the exciting and promising trajectory of my career. Furthermore, I'm actively involved in non-profit projects, supporting causes close to my heart.

I also participate in non-profit projects, like the recent “Brushstrokes over Bullets” exhibition in Los Angeles and the Ukrainian War refugees fundraising event at Webster Hall in San Francisco - both in 2022. I also sent over 12K to Ukraine to support civilians suffering from the war.

Amazing. What are your exhibition plans for this year, and where can people see and acquire your works?

I invite everyone to join me at my upcoming personal exhibition titled "Underwater Reflections." The exhibition will officially open on June 10, 2023, from 6 pm to 9 pm at Roth & Taylor Fine Art Gallery in Los Angeles (6023 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232, United States).

At this exhibition, I will present my signature works from series such as "Steps," "Rounds," and "Porcelain." Additionally, I will showcase pieces from my latest series, "REFLECTIONS," which offers a departure from my classic underwater figurative works. Instead, I turn my attention to the mesmerizing reflections on the water's surface, creating striking artworks that blend figurative and abstract elements with vibrant colors and captivating distorted forms. The "REFLECTIONS" series represents my own innovative take on photography.

Throughout the year, I also plan to participate in a project by Bruce Lurie Gallery in Los Angeles, potentially join a group exhibition at the Louvre in France and partake in various art fairs (confirmation pending). To stay updated on all the latest news and upcoming projects, I encourage everyone to follow me on Instagram and bookmark my website. I would be delighted to have you as part of my creative journey!
