Chef Debbie Lee Brings Joseon To Silver Lake Plus A Cup Of Salvation - Here’s What’s Popping Up

Chef Debbie Lee's new Korean pop-up concept, Joseon, will start a month-long residency this weekend in Silver Lake in the former Causita space, next to Bar Moruno. The concept is a modern interpretation of the cuisine that was created specifically for the Royal Family of Korea’s last dynasty, the Joseon Dynasty. Inspired by her Northern Korean roots, Lee is creating new, palate-forward experiences. The tasting menu pop-up will make its debut on Friday, Oct., in anticipation of her first brick-and-mortar restaurant, Yi Cha, this winter in Highland Park.

The $79 five-course menu includes a variety of choices of juk (porridge,) Hoe/Hwe (tartare,) jeon (egg battered,) jjim (braised stew,) guksu/Tteok (noodles/rice) plus dessert. The $99 seven-course menu adds wang mandu (royal dumplings) and gui (BBQ) Reservations: resy.com/cities/la/joseon

Wine. War. Family. Survival. Following a monumental and incredibly risky venture, undertaken by Vahe Keushguerian from WineWorks, the first modern wine to come out of Iran in more than 44 years since the 1979 Iranian Revolution is being bottled.  Keushguerian ventured into Iran with a film crew under the guise that they were shooting a travel show and visited dozens of vineyards across thousands of kilometers of the country, the birthplace of wine. All the grapes he purchased were from the ancient and historically significant Rasha from the Kurdistan regions of Iran known as Sanandaj and Kermanshah. The grapes were smuggled out of Iran to Yerevan, Armenia, where the wine is being produced by WineWorks. The final bottles are going to be red and sparkling Rasha wines available in the States later in the fall.

This significant mission was captured on video and will be released as part of the 2023 movie Cup of Salvation, released theatrically starting on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Laemmle Theatre in Glendale before rolling out to other cities. Both Keushguerian and SOMM TV director Jason Wise will be in attendance.

And while we’re on the wine wagon: A special six-course wine pairing dinner hosted by Jon Bonné, author of The New French Wine, will take place at Juliet, the Parisian-inspired restaurant in Culver City on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m., on the outdoor terrace.  Tickets are $295 per person and can be purchased via Resy. The menu consists of a first course of oysters and caviar and champagne, followed by scallops and roasted quash, salad Lyonnaise, duck confit cigars, ricotta gnocchi with red wine braised short ribs, lamb rib chops and steak au poivre. Dessert includes more champagne, dark chocolate sea salt eclairs and brown butter madeleines.
