The family of stand-up comedian-turned actor Gilbert Gottfried, 67, announced his death Tuesday afternoon.

While the family did not give specific details about Gottfried's death, they attributed it to "long illness."

"We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness," the family said through Gottfried's social media platforms. "In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children."

Gottfried's unmistakable voice made him a staple in 1990s cartoons, with his iconic voiceover work in such role as Iago in Disney's Aladdin films, Mister Mxyzptlk in Superman: The Animated Series and was even the longtime voice for the Aflac duck in the insurance comapny's commercials.

His abrasive and often uncomfortable style of comedy always grabbed the audience's attention, down to his very last tweet where he addressed the Will Smith slap incident at the Oscars by
saying, "Which is the worst crime? Chris Rock being physically assaulted or Chris Rock telling a joke?"

In the past year, the comedy world has lost multiple legends such as Gottfried, Norm MacDonald, Louie Anderson and Bob Saget, all before they reached their 70s.
