Dining With The Sultan at LACMA And Camphor Heads West - Here’s What’s Popping Up

Michelin-starred Camphor in downtown LA is heading west for a pop-up at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel on Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10. In collaboration with OpenTable, the format will be a multi-course prix fixe dining room experience with options per course starting at $150 per person. A special bar menu featuring smaller bites also will be available for $50, which includes the famous Le Burger served with pomme frites.

Co-Executive Chefs Max Boonthanakit and Lijo George’s menu will include Pani Puri, savory onion and cheese tart, sea bream crudo, baguette with epoisses butter, sole and scallop, with a choice of profiterole featuring cherry or chocolate sauce for dessert. 

The series continues with: 

Tsubaki Dec. 16-17: Led by Charles Namba and Courtney Kaplan, Tsubaki is a classic Izakaya, a style of informal tavern at the heart of Japanese dining tradition with a robust sake program featuring highly allocated producers located in Echo Park. 

OtoñoDec. 21-22: Otoño is a Michelin-rated modern Spanish-inspired restaurant exploring tapas and paella from chef Teresa Montano.

Alimento Jan. 12-13: Alimento Italian restaurant in Silver Lake from chef Zach Pollack features a menu of small plates, pastas, and large platters for sharing, alongside an eclectic wine list from small producers. 

LA-based Red Chickz will debut its latest menu creation, the Honey Butter Chicken Sandwich, on Saturday, Dec. 2, at both LA locations. For one day only, the new sandwich will be available for $5 (regularly $13) in celebration of Red Chickz’ first out-of-market opening in San Diego. Combining savory and sweet, the crunchy chicken tender is topped with house-made honey butter on a soft potato bun.

The 15th annual Santa Monica Pub Crawl to benefit the Westside Food Bank will take place on Saturday, Dec. 16. Crawlers can choose from three different routes throughout the city and get exclusive $6 to $9 food and drink specials at 20 local favorites including The Victorian, Jameson's Irish Pub, Tavern on Main, Twelve Twelve, Barney's Beanery, and Britannia Pub. Tickets also include one free drink, no cover charges, priority entry into the city's hottest bars, beer gardens, DJs and live entertainment, photo booths, and entry into Santa’s official after-party. Tickets are on sale now and start at $20 in advance.

The Halo Top ice cream truck will hand out free treats at participating Walmarts from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., through Sunday, Dec. 3:

Citizen Public Market has launched Citizen Quarterly, a culinary series of months-long pop-up experiences from notable chefs and creators, which kicks off with The PRESS, a sandwich, soup and salad spot from the talents behind WeHo Sausage Co. Signature dishes include the Chopped Beef and Cheese, a tower of braised beef and onions smothered in melted provolone on ciabatta; late night Soup & Toasties combos with tomato bisque with grilled cheese; and seasonal draft beers, shakes and ice cream floats.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents Dining with the Sultan: The Fine Art of Feasting, the first exhibition to explore Islamic art in the context of its associated culinary traditions. Featuring some 250 works from 30 public and private collections across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, Dining with the Sultan celebrates how gustatory discernment was a fundamental activity at the great Islamic courts. The exhibition is curated by Linda Komaroff, department head and curator, Art of the Middle East, at LACMA.

Lunetta will host an exclusive, one-night collaboration with Pizza Chef Michele Galifi, who will bring his wood-fire pizza oven and famed dough and cheeses on Friday, Dec.  1. The collaboration will feature three specially curated pizzas, including Bolognese Bliss (Galifi's dough topped with Lunetta's signature bolognese sauce), Seafood Symphony (BBQ salmon pizza), and a vegetarian Farm-to-Table Feast.
