Dove Armitage Take Flight in Silver Lake

Dove Armitage Take Flight in Silver Lake: "Ladies and gentleman, the captain has turned on the fasten seatbelt sign," a voice states over an intro tape (which we later learn is called "Flight 777"). "If you have not already done so, please store your carry-on luggage underneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin." Apparently, we're about to go on a journey.

Some of the more keen-eyed music fans out there may recognize Dove Armitage as the former bass player with the Death Valley Girls or Yungblud. Her resume is undeniably impressive, but her solo work should see name go up a level. Her beautifully uncomfortable electro-alt-pop is as inventive as it is thrilling.

She has a new EP, Concernless, coming out in November. "I address negativity by acknowledging it, but then figuring out how I can spin it in a positive way. The things we go through as humans, as women, as queer people, suck, but they can make us better, too,” she said of it in a statement. “How can we acknowledge these experiences without belittling them, to live and thrive regardless of those challenges?”

She's teased the EP release by dropping the open sign two tracks as singles -- "Brittle" and "It Won't Die," and she performed both of those at the Silverlake Lounge on Saturday night. The latter is the most recent, and she said, "’It Won’t Die’ is by no means a diss track, but rather an open discussion about navigating outward toxic behavior that seems to, no matter what you do to separate yourself from, just not go away. Or rather, just not die."

Armitage's set on Saturday was short but sweet. We're fairly new to her, but she seemed to be focussing on songs from the new EP (her first solo release came in 2021). Her performance took us on an emotional trip -- fraught yet hypnotic, delicate yet filled with strength.

"It Won't Die" was co-written by Chris Greatti, who is known for his work with the likes of WILLOW, Poppy and Demi Lovato. Those are the sort of names that Dove Armitage should be mentioned alongside soon.
