Emmys 2022: Kudos to our Favorite Creative Arts Winners
September 6, 2022
The Primetime Emmys will air next Monday, Sept. 12, but the Creative Arts Emmys (honoring artistic and technical achievement on television) were announced this weekend. As it stands it took two nights for the first batch to be awarded, but we must say, we think a restructuring is necessary. A lot of the early bird categories (such as supporting roles, specials and variety shows) are watched by big audiences; they deserve to be acknowledged on TV's biggest night, or at very least, the night before. Television Academy take note: TV's Biggest Weekend would elevate everyone and the awards themselves. Give it a shot!
In any case, looks like those FYC (For Your Consideration) billboards all over L.A. did their magic once again. Some shows didn't need 'em, though. Regardless, the Weekly is happy to see so many great programs and performances acknowledged, many that we've championed here in our Entertainment section (see links and embeds below).
A no-brainer win came for Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back docuseries which we dubbed the best reality TV show ever, while the L.A.-centric Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, featuring Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre won big, giving every Angeleno and hip-hop fan something to be proud about.
Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to win a competitive Emmy category, for narration of Netflix's Our Great National Parks, and queen of everything RuPaul made history as the Emmys most-winning Black artist ever for Outstanding Host of a Reality or Competition Program, for Rupaul's Drag Race. (Ru's now got a sickening seven gold statues in total).
Colman Domingo picked up a statue for Best Guest Actor- Drama Series for Euphoria, while a beloved Roseanne alumni, Laurie Metcalf, took home an award for Best Guest Actress- Comedy Series for Hacks. Lee Yoo-Mi snagged Best Guest Actress- Drama Series for Squid Game and Nathan Lane got Best Guest Actor- Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (who graced our Emmy issue's cover in 2020) won for Best Writing- Variety Series. And the new Queer Eye scored best Structured Reality Program.
And finally, while we feel strongly that his work on The OA deserved the honor first, we're happy to congratulate local choreographer, Ryan Heffington, who won the Choreography category for his dance work on Euphoria, which was truly unforgettable. See for yourself below.
And here's The OA movements we still can't forget:
