Five for Father’s Day 2023: Kicks, Cars, Figures and Frames
June 17, 2023
It’s safe to say that moms milk Mother’s Day more than dads do Father's Day... But our pops' deserve thoughtful celebration, too. Every year our culture department seeks out last minute gifts and dad-themed fun with Angelenos in mind for the day of dads. (See last year's list here). Here’s our recs for 2023:
When the pandemic exploded and the furloughs hit, it forced people like Miles McAlpin to get creative. Making bootleg action figures was a hobby he enjoyed that turned into a business as Sir Collect A Lot. Sculpting clay onto old toys and repainting them, then creating clever packaging referencing pop culture, he made figures that nichey collectors simply had to have. As the business grew, he never went back to his old job, even after the worst of COVID was behind us.
These days he works with Dov Kelemer of DKE toys in Los Angeles on commissioned work and limited runs of funny figs and hybrid dolls such as “Kill Phil (Dr. Phil in Uma Thurman’s yellow Tarantino trilogy look), a stocky Adam Sandler NBA figure and a very, jolly Tyler the Creator doll. Most moms and dads of adult children know only too well that impaired vision is one of the first signs of becoming a “seasoned individual. Once we all succumb to being a person who wears glasses, for reading, driving or everything, most of us want stylish ones. Warby Parker, which has a flagship in Silver Lake, came about as an alternative to traditional outlets, with a focus on affordability and style.
With exterior art by Buckley, the store has a vast selection of spectacles, which make for a fun shopping visit with dad and a great gift. If you can’t get out to the store, utilize their home try-on app feature which will help find the perfect father frames. Their new Summer 2023 line has lots of looks to choose from. warbyparker.com
Cue The Rolling Stones’ “Fool to Cry (their most fatherly track) off of 1976’s Black and Blue for this one... It’s probably not too much of a presumption to say that most dads dig the Stones, because why wouldn’t they? And even those who don’t agree that they’re the greatest rock n’ roll band of all time, have to acknowledge the iconic brilliance of the Stones tongue logo. While it’s been licensed a lot, we haven’t seen footwear do it right til now.
Southern California's own Skechers shoe brand just launched a collection this week that'll provide complete satisfaction for the Stonesy dad. Skechers X Stones offers an array of new styles that incorporate the classic tongue in stylish ways (they have styles for women too, so you can be Glimmer Twins.) Speaking of music, if dad is an audiophile, he probably loves wearing cans. Upgrading to earbuds is a great gift, but it must be said, Apple’s earbuds are pretty subpar in terms of sound quality. There’s lots of good brands on the market these days but we like Bowers and Wilkins latest in-ear headphones, in particular the Pi5 S2 ($299) and Pi7 S2 ($399) models, which tout “smart, intuitive modifications including increased battery performance with five hours of listening time before a recharge is required and enhanced wireless connectivity.
Improved call quality, 25-meter Bluetooth range and easy wireless audio retransmission that connects to external audio sources via its smart charging case, add to their merits. Get 'em at L.A. outlets like Ahead Stereo, Audio Video Today, Mir Audio Video and Video Audio center or online. bowerswilkins.com
We first learned about Turo, when we interviewed Luis Guzman during a shoot at West Coast Customs in Burbank. The shop, best known for pimping rides, had just created a Wednesday Addams-themed hearse and the company was offering it to rent for only $13 a day. Beyond outrageous theme cars, Turo is a unique local gift idea dad might never expect.
Promoted as “the world’s largest car sharing marketplace where guests can book anything they want from other users who put their autos up for borrow, the site has the newest sports cars, spiffy vintage convertibles and the luxury wheels of dad's dreams, all delivered with special attention to customer service that Hertz and Enterprise sorely lack. turo.comEditor’s note: The disclaimer below refers to advertising posts and does not apply to this or any other editorial stories.
