It’s safe to say that moms milk Mother’s Day more than dads do Father's Day... But our pops' deserve thoughtful celebration, too. When the pandemic exploded and the furloughs hit, it forced people like Miles McAlpin to get creative. Making bootleg action figures was a hobby he enjoyed that turned into a business as Sir Collect A Lot.  Sculpting clay onto old toys and repainting them, then creating clever packaging referencing pop culture, he made figures that nichey collectors simply had to have. As the business grew, he never went back to his old job, even after the worst of COVID was behind us.

These days he works with Dov Kelemer of DKE toys in Los Angeles on commissioned work and limited runs of funny figs and hybrid dolls such as “Kill Phil (Dr. Phil in Uma Thurman’s yellow Tarantino trilogy look), a stocky Adam Sandler NBA figure and a very, jolly Tyler the Creator doll. Most moms and dads of adult children know only too well that impaired vision is one of the first signs of becoming a “seasoned individual. Once we all succumb to being a person who wears glasses, for reading, driving or everything, most of us want stylish ones. Cue The Rolling Stones’ “Fool to Cry (their most fatherly track) off of 1976’s Black and Blue for this one... It’s probably not too much of a presumption to say that most dads dig the Stones, because why wouldn’t they? And even those who don’t agree that they’re the greatest rock n’ roll band of all time, have to acknowledge the iconic brilliance of the Stones tongue logo. While it’s been licensed a lot, we haven’t seen footwear do it right til now.

Speaking of music, if dad is an audiophile, he probably loves wearing cans. Upgrading to earbuds is a great gift, but it must be said, Apple’s earbuds are pretty subpar in terms of sound quality. We first learned about Turo, when we interviewed Luis Guzman during a shoot at West Coast Customs in Burbank. The shop, best known for pimping rides, had just created a Wednesday Addams-themed hearse and the company was offering it to rent for only $13 a day. Beyond outrageous theme cars, Turo is a unique local gift idea dad might never expect.
