For the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, the future looks female.

The five-member body has never had a majority of women members. But come November, the board could have as many as four.

Two supervisorial seats were up for grabs tonight, with Mark Ridley-Thomas running unopposed for his final term in office. Women finished in first place in both races.

In the election to replace Don Knabe, congresswoman and former city councilmember Janice Hahn is currently in first place, with 48 percent of the vote just short of the threshold she needs to win the seat outright and avoid a November runoff. As things stand now, Knabe aide Steve Napolitano is in second place, with 39 percent of the vote.

Only about 13 percent of precincts have been counted, so results could change.

Hahn's father, Kenneth Hahn, served on the board for four decades. Her brother, Jim Hahn, was L.A.'s mayor for one term.

In the race to replace Michael Antonovich, the supervisor's chief of staff, Kathryn Barger, is in first place, while Bob Huff is just barely ahead of Ara Najarian for second place. If results hold, Barger and Huff would face each other in November.

City Councilman Mitchell Englander and Elan Carr, who'd been supported by casino mogul Sheldon Adelson to the tune of $100,000, appear to have had a bad evening. Each has about 11 percent of the vote.

The November election could mark a significant shift for the board ? in two ways. If Janice Hahn wins, Democrats will outnumber Republicans on the board four members to one (both Barger and Huff are Republicans). If both Hahn and Barger win, Ridley-Thomas will be the only male board member, a startling reversal from just two years ago, when there was only one woman on the board.

UPDATE at Wednesday, June 8, 8:30 a.m.: An interesting reversal in Antonovich's District 5 seat: Though there are still some provisional and absentee ballots left to count, it appears that Democrat Darrell Park has squeezed into the runoff against Barger. That means it's possible ? though not entirely likely ? that all five Supervisors will be Democrats come November.
