LA Pride Parade Leaving West Hollywood

After spending 49 years in West Hollywood and becoming a staple in the city, LA Pride has decided to move its celebration to a new, undisclosed location.

In a letter from the Christopher Street West board of directors, who organize the Pride events, they cited construction in West Hollywood and "the changing demographics of Greater Los Angeles" as some reasons for the move.

"We are grateful to the City of West Hollywood for our many years of partnership and collaboration in presenting LA Pride," the letter read. "West Hollywood has been a successful home for the parade and festival, providing millions with a unique and incredible experience centered in this city."

West Hollywood Mayor Lindsay Horvath said the decision was "a surprise" to her, according to an interview with the Los Angeles Blade, adding that West Hollywood was the heart of the LGBTQ community.

The organization's June festival had was postponed due to COVID-19 and while they attempted a joint march in support of Black Lives Matter, their plans fell through after criticisms over police permits being issued at an event that protested law enforcement. The march would ultimately go on with different organizers.

The parade originated in 1970 and is getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary.Â
