Maria Esquivel Fatally Struck in DUI Collision on Highway 99 [Selma, CA]

Chui Kyu Shin Arrested after Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash near Mountain View Avenue

SELMA, CA (October 19, 2023) - Monday evening, Maria Esquivel lost her life in a collision involving a driver under the influence on Highway 99.

Around 9:15 p.m., emergency personnel arrived at the scene on the northbound lanes of the freeway just north of Mountain View Avenue.

According to reports, a Chevrolet van collided with the rear of a slowly moving Ford Explorer. This impact caused the Ford to veer off the road and collide with a concrete barrier.

Medics arrived and declared the back seat passenger, Maria Esquivel, a 71-year-old resident of Clovis, deceased. The 76-year-old male driver of the Ford and his two female passengers, aged 72 and 26, sustained minor injuries.

All three injured individuals were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for medical care.

Meanwhile, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers apprehended the van's driver for driving under the influence and placed them in custody at Fresno County Jail. The suspect was identified as 61-year-old Chul Kyu Shin from Van Nuys.
