Masks have become such a political issue that even Trump has conceded to wearing them, calling doing so patriotic via Twitter (though that might have been his campaign's idea). Whether or not this makes stubborn anti-maskers start covering up, the alternative is grim: lengthened lockdowns for us all, more business closures and of course, covid-19 illness and deaths.
