Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will meet with LAPD Chief of Police Michel Moore as he seeks a second term.
Moore's current term is set to end in June of 2023 and he sent an application for a second term to the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners Monday.
"I have been notified of Chief Moore's request for reappointment," Bass said in a statement. "He and I will meet soon to discuss his request and my vision to keep Angelenos safe in every neighborhood."
Mayor Bass, who assumed office on December 13, had previously expressed having no plans of replacing Moore.
In his letter to the commission, Moore expressed a desire to address a reduction in staff and expand diversity within the department.
“Chief Moore is an outstanding law enforcement executive who is recognized nationally for his expertise,” Commission President William Briggs said in a statement.
Angelenos will have an opportunity for public comment before a decision is made and if reappointed, Moore will be able to second and final five-year term.
Moore was first appointed to LAPD chief in 2018 by then-Mayor Eric Garcetti and has served in the department since 1981.
The police chief started his LAPD career as a police officer before moving on to serving as a detective, sergeant, lieutenant and assistant chief.
