Quick Bite: Delicias In Desert Hot Springs Is On Fire

As the temperatures slowly fall in the desert and the season kicks off for trips to the Coachella Valley, Delicias Mexican Cuisine off the beaten path in Desert Hot Springs is on fire with the local crowd, and deservedly so.

A shocking pink beacon on Pierson Blvd. conveniently located on pot shop row, Delicias offers a colorful full bar and an extensive menu featuring Mexico City street taco plates, tamales, fajitas and a selection of Molcajetes including one brimming with grilled chicken, carne asada, chorizo, green onion, nopales and queso fresco served guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, beans and warm tortillas.

The Vulcan taco stands out among all of its volcanic counterparts, erupting with cheese, carne asada, guacamole and crispy pickled onions.  A great stop for seafood lovers, the aguachile trio is an artful rainbow of red, green and mango sauces, showcasing the stunning variety of housemade moles using only chilies direct from Mexico City. Margaritas come in a long list of flavors including Jamaica and watermelon.  Best bet: a mojitos flight sample of four flavors.

Breakfast items include lots of egg dishes and pancake stacks, a Delicias Omelet with chili strips, onions, corn and mozzarella cheese served with home fries. There’s also tres leches French toast and the Huevos Divorciados come with two fried eggs and red and green sauce over two tortillas with queso fresco and homemade fries.  The chilaquiles arrive covered with the sauce of your choice,  served with black beans on the side and queso fresco. Choices include green and red sauce, chile pasilla and mole. Add eggs, carne asada, or chicken for an additional  $1.99, and the traditional molletes come with or without chorizo.

The family-owned restaurant opened in 2019 by Desert Hot Springs locals Cesar Olvera, his brother Armando and Armando’s wife Angelica in the former  Sidewinder restaurant space,  a dusty fixture dating back to the 1970’s.  It’s not a hole in the wall and prices are equivalent to downtown Palm Springs, but Delicias is definitely worth a detour on your next desert road trip.
