Gas prices in Los Angeles have not let up with a new record of $6.17 per gallon being averaged for regular grade fuel through Memorial Day weekend.

The gas prices jumped more than 15 cents through Memorial Day weekend and have increased more than $2 from this time last year, according to averages recorded by the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Over the holiday weekend, a downtown L.A. gas station was spotted by several selling its regular grade fuel for $8.05 per gallon, with several befuddled Angelenos snapping photos of the Chevron station on the corner of Alameda Street and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue.

Gas prices are now exceeding $8.00 in LA. This is beyond acceptable, U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs tweeted out Tuesday. We must expand oil and gas exploration, development, and production in our American energy fields.

The national average for gas prices is also hitting record highs, although they are not as high as California prices, averaging $4.62 per gallon for regular grade, as of May 31.

In March, California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a $400 gas rebate for California drivers, but the plan has since seen delays, with the governor not expecting those checks to mail out until October.
