LONG BEACH, CA (October 17, 2023) - Saturday evening, a pedestrian accident claimed the life of Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar on Shoreline Drive.
The incident transpired at approximately 6:35 p.m., in the vicinity of Aquarium Way. According to reports, the driver of a white Chevrolet Bolt was traveling in the wrong direction on the westbound lanes and disregarded a red traffic signal.
This resulted in the Chevrolet Bolt colliding with multiple pedestrians and occupied vehicles, all without any attempt to decelerate. Furthermore, the driver struck a woman who was pushing a child in a stroller within a designated crosswalk.
The suspect continued to drive in the opposing lane, subsequently striking numerous other vehicles. First responders pronounced the woman pushing the stroller deceased at the accident scene. She was later identified as 60-year-old Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar of Long Beach.
Paramedics transported several other pedestrians to a hospital, where they currently remain in stable condition.
Meanwhile, law enforcement detained the Chevrolet driver, 46-year-old Khalid Yagobbi from Los Angeles, on suspicion of murder. Yagobbi's bail has been set at $2 million.
