Royal Hawaiian Estates Tour at Modernism Week Is Tiki Heaven

Modernism Week features more than 350 events, including the Modernism Show & Sale, signature home tours, films, lectures, double decker architectural bus tours, nightly parties and live music, walking and bike tours, tours of Sunnylands, fashion, classic cars, modern garden tours and a vintage travel trailer exhibition. It's more than a week, running through Feb. 24.

Here's a taste of the Royal Hawaiian Estates tour featuring artist Shag's (akaJosh Agle) tiki condo.

Architects Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison combined modernist ideas with Polynesian themes when they designed the Royal Hawaiian Estates in south Palm Springs. Built in 1960, the complex has 12 buildings with 40 units on 5 acres. Wooden tiki ornaments and other decorative details give the buildings and the grounds a tropical feel.
