How Christmas Music Started
What paved the way for modern day Christmas carolers like Mariah Carey to belt out what she wanted for Christmas were the Romans. They would celebrate “Saturnalia” during winter to honor Saturn — the God of Agriculture. However, the Christians didn’t like some of the Roman pagans’ traditions, yet they also wanted in on the celebration. They eventually reached an agreement that the Romans’ Saturnalia season would be the Christians’ celebration of Jesus’ birth. They eventually replaced pagan songs with Christian ones. So much so, that a Roman bishop even ordered “Angel’s Hymn” be sung during the festive season. Eventually, new Christmas carols emerged and they were sung in different languages. From the 1500s’ “Boar’s Head Carol” to “Silent Night” which was written in 1818, the tradition of celebrating Christmas by singing grew more popular across Europe.
2022’s Best New Christmas Songs
Classic tunes are festive, but sometimes, we want refreshing Christmas carols. Billboard Hot 100 compiled a list of 2022’s best new Christmas songs. This year, Lizzo dropped her version of “Someday at Christmas;” it’s a soulful take on Stevie Wonder’s classic hit. Noah Cyrus and PJ Harding collaborated again for “Snow in LA” to tell us how they miss their “home back in PA.” We’d love a white Christmas, too, for a change. We truly do. It’ll take decades for us to get over the cult-classic comedy film Mean Girls, and even Lindsay Lohan knows that herself. Thus, the actress and singer blessed us with her “Jingle Bell Rock” revival for Netflix’s Falling For Christmas. The men are also roving around the holidays with their own Christmas songs. R&B singer Ne-Yo’s “Everyday Is a Holiday” is one worth listening to. The Backstreet Boys are also back. The boy band covered Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and we’re not sure if we should be nostalgic about the ‘80s or ‘90s as they fused the two decades together. Nevertheless, the song is a classic that should be sung for the next several Christmases to come.
