The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday and as usual, social and entertainment media has something to say about it, with call-outs for big omissions and kudos for deserving nods.
The Power of the Dog leads the pack with 12 nominations, including one for Jane Campion, making her the first woman to be recognized in the best director category more than once. Steven Spielberg is now an 11 time producer nominee, thanks to
West Side Story, which got seven nods total.
Dune got 10 noms, including best picture, while
Belfast also earned seven and
King Richard scored six.
With
some exceptions, pretty much all of
LA Weekly and
Village Voice critics' favorite films (as touted in our year end tallies
HERE) were recognized. Despite some snubs and unexpected surprises, we'd say the nominations this year are pretty spot on, with everyone deserving of acclaim.
If there's one thing we have problems with, it's the documentary category, which left out some powerful 2021 chronicles.
Summer of Soul was a no-brainer, but so many other great films were not recognized. (Read our list of favorites
HERE).
The Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, March 27 in Hollywood. See below for the full nominee list and click hyperlink titles below to read our reviews of the nominated movies.
