The 71st annual Emmy Awards nominations have been announced, and it looks like cable and network TV are still holding their own against the hot and trendy streaming services many thought might take them down. It's not happening this year, anyway. In terms of recognition, HBO rules once again (Netflix beat 'em last year) with
Game of Thrones bludgeoning everyone on the boob tube battlefield with 32 nominations, and
Veep, which also ran its final show on HBO this year, garnering 9. In total, HBO reigns for 2019 with a total of 137 nominations, but Netflix is right behind with 117.
Network programs such as
This Is Us, The Good Place and the venerable
Saturday Night Live also have strong showings. Amazon's
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept the awards last year, and makes a bid to do it again with 20 nods, while Ryan Murphy's groundbreaking FX series
Pose and Netflix's
Russian Doll were deservedly recognized in multiple categories.
Russian Doll is not exactly a comedy though, is it? Natasha Lyonne's a hoot, but still. If you're asking yourself why?
The Handmaid's Tale, Stranger Things?and
Big Little Lies aren't on the list much, it's because they are currently airing outside the eligibility window, which leaves more room for some newbies.
We would have liked to see some love for Starz's
Vida or TBS' hilarious
The Detour (two of our favorite shows right now), or more acknowledgment for Hulu programs such as
Shrill or
Catch-22 (at least
Pen15's writers Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle are on the ballot). And it is nice to see
RuPaul's Drag Race recognized once again as well as host-ess RuPaul, who curiously goes head to head with sweet but bland Marie Kondo of Netflix's
Tidying Up. When They See Us, about the Central Park Five, just qualified for consideration, airing before the cut-off and its 16 nominations are all well-deserved.
The big question in L.A. ? after what will they be wearing at the ceremony? ? is this: Did all those FYC (for your consideration) billboards placed around town to brainwash Emmy voters into picking certain shows make any difference in the end? Only the studios' accountants know for sure.
Read Michael Cooper's interview with Emmy nominee
Lena Headey, and his piece about the importance of
Pose, and read my takes on nominees
Russian Doll, Big Mouth, Surviving R. Kelly and more from earlier this year in my other
TV Party columns.See the major nominations below. Full list (including technical, editing and writing) at
