Waiting for LP Giobbi: Dance music superstar-in-the-making LP Giobbi grew up playing jazz and classical piano and graduated with a Jazz Piano Performance degree from UC Berkeley.
"After college I would play solo jazz piano gigs at a bar in San Francisco every weekend and one night an engineer and producer for Daft Punk heard me playing and asked if I wanted to join an all female electronic band in LA that the Daft Arts team was putting together," she says. "The other women in the band were also jazz musicians and together we learned about synthesis and electronic gear and I started using Ableton and Protools to produce for the band. I have always personally taken it seriously because I loved it and because I wanted to be a visual representation for other women considering only 2% of producers are women. My first real 'break' came when Sofi Tukker asked me to go on tour with them and that is when I learned how to DJ and read a dance floor. I was horrible at first but they believed in me and gave me the space to practice and learn in front of their supportive and loving dance floors."
She describes her sound today as, "Piano House that aims to elevate your joy." That can be heard on her latest release, "Waiting."
"DJ Redfield and I started this track in London at the Defected studios," Giobbi says. "I was working on a separate tune with DJ Rae and remembered these awesome vocals she recorded in an earlier session so we threw them in to see if they would give us the lift we were looking for and sure enough they had us out of our seats dancing."
On November 25, LP Giobbi performs at the Roxy.
"We have a FULL takeover planned," she says. "First, I’m playing my Light Places set which is more of a live set highlighting my debut album by the same name. I’ve taken away the CDJs and added some extra synths and keyboards and pedals. It's more of an emotional journey and my opportunity to weave in songs that are less hard hitting. We are then going to clear the room to get it ready for my Yes Yes Yes afterparty, set up the DJ decks in the round in the middle of the dancefloor and I will then play a 3 hour set open to close for the afters which will hopefully turn into a hot sweaty wild dance party."
Looking ahead, Giobbi has much planned for the coming months.
"I wrap up my Light Places tour in December and then head to Art Basel for some gigs," she says. "I’m working on my second album, signing a few new exciting artists to my Defected imprint label Yes Yes Yes and then playing some New Year’s shows including Eye Heart SF in San Francisco with Diplo. And of course, spending as much time as possible celebrating Christmas with all the bells and whistles I can muster."
Waiting for LP Giobbi: LP Giobbi's "Waiting" is out now. She performs at the Roxy at 9 p.m. on Saturday, November 25 at the Roxy with Bad Snacks.
