Everyone wants to find their soulmate, but how can you be sure that your partner is The One? Before you commit to a lifetime of happiness (or misery) with someone, it's important to put them to the test. Here are six foolproof ways to test if your partner is worthy of you.
1. See how they handle stress.
We all have our breaking points, but some people are better at handling
stress than others. If you want to know how your partner will react under pressure, wait until they're having a bad day and see how they handle it. If they're patient and understanding, they're a keeper. But if they lash out or try to take their frustration out on you, they might not be the one for you.
2. Observe how they treat other people.
The way your partner treats those around them says a lot about their character. If they're rude or dismissive to servers, cashiers, or other people in positions of authority, that's a red flag. However, if they're kind and respectful to everyone they meet, that's a good sign. Pay attention to the way they treat their friends and family too; if they're always picking fights or talking trash behind people's backs, move on.
3. Check their phone habits.
In this day and age, our phones are pretty much glued to our hands. So, if your partner can't go five minutes without checking theirs, it might be a sign that they're not fully present when they're with you. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule (like if they're waiting for an important call), but generally speaking, you want a partner who's able to put their phone away and give you their undivided attention.
4. Find out what makes them tick.
Everyone has things that make them happy, sad, annoyed, etc., so it's important that you know what those things are for your partner. This way, you can avoid pushing their buttons and causing unnecessary arguments. Plus, it'll give you a better idea of what kind of person they are overall. If their happiness depends on material possessions or validation from others, that's not necessarily a bad thing; just be aware of it so you can manage your expectations accordingly.
5. See how well they communicate.
Communication is key in any relationship, so it's important that your partner is good at communicating with you—and vice versa. If there are things that bother you about the way they communicate (e.g., interrupting you mid-sentence), try bringing it up in a non-confrontational way and see how they react. If they're receptive to your concerns and willing to work on things together, great! But if they get defensive or refuse to budge on the issue, it might be time to move on.
6. Watch how much alcohol they drink.
Alcohol can bring out the best—and worst—in people. So, If your partner
drinks heavily, pay attention to the type of person they become when intoxicated. Do, they become loud and obnoxious? Belligerent and aggressive? Sullen and withdrawn? Knowing how alcohol affects them can help you avoid potential conflict down the road.
Although there's no surefire way to know if someone is right for you, these six tests will give you a pretty good idea of whether or not your partner is worthy of your time and energy. So, don't be afraid to put them to the test! After all, you deserve nothing less than the best. Good luck!
