The William Grant Still Arts Center presents
Legacy: Rocking the Nation (RTN), 30 Years of Creativity -- a timely historical survey examining the intersection of art and hip-hop culture through the prism of one of L.A.'s absolutely legendary graffiti crews. Founded in 1988 -- one of the city's only all-black crews -- RTN is known, beyond their serious skills and progressive creativity, for their commitment to education, community-building, place-making, and celebration of cultural identity.
Responsible for among other landmark works of street art, the glorious Crenshaw Wall Our Mighty Contribution, all of this and more is documented and demonstrated in this exhibition across three decades of archives, materials, music, and original art.
Curated by
AiseBorn, RTN member since 2010, the exhibition includes artwork by King? CRE8, Mark7, Enkone, SANO, Gaknew, Roder, Auxe, Crown, P-Chuck, Mask, Midzt, Sight, Duce, music by Monstroe and many more.
Following the opening reception on Saturday, September 28 (featuring RTN DJs, dancers and a beat box battle) a slate of related programs and activities include a lettering class with CRE8, a panel discussion with the RTN crew, and a conversation about the newly commercial status of street art. See the
Still Arts Center website for details.
