Los Angeles City Council acting president Mitch O'Farrell announced he would be removing Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo from their committee chairmanships and assignments.

O'Farrell disclosed that councilmembers are required to remain on at least one committee, per Los Angeles City Council rules and his office would be "ironing out the details" for their removals.

"My mission and my duty is to help this city heal and to keep it moving forward so that we can all move on from this terrible time," O'Farrell said in a press conference Monday.

The councilmember removals from the committee does not affect their seat on the council itself and O'Farrell said, "there is no new news regarding resignations."

With former Councilwoman and council president Nury Martinez having stepped down, the remaining council members will vote on a new council president Tuesday.

"At tomorrow's meeting I look forward to discussing a number of items on the agenda, including the election of a new city council president," O'Farrell said.

The acting president also said he has no desire to run for the position with his main focus being on re-election for the 13th district seat, as well as community matters.

Another discussion for tomorrow's meeting will be redistricting "reform" and the potential of creating a redistricting commission.

The council's current redistricting process came under question, as it was a prominent point of discussion in the leaked audio recording, to the point where the California Department of Justice said it would investigate the process.
