Punks and skaters, filmmakers and rockers, and at least one “Runaway” congregated at the Daggers Rule! gallery opening in Little Ethiopia to relive skateboarding's golden years as seen through the seminal skate flick, Thrashin'. The 1986 film was a landmark in representing the the Venice skate scene, including some of the sport's finest, including Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, and Tony Hawk, not to mention a Goonies-era Josh Brolin. Exhibit A took a Delorean back to these halcyon days and commissioned some of the original Daggers (badass LA punks from Thrashin'), and Twilight, Thirteen, Thrashin, and Lords of Dogtown filmmaker, Catherine Hardwicke, to deck out Levi's jean vests and boards for the occasion.

Daggers of the world unite!

The show, curated by Catharina Petersen, brought the Daggers back to together nearly 24 years after they skated pools and performed the nefarious “joust” for Thrashin'. But for some of the guys it seemed like just yesterday that they were starting shit on set.

“Remember when I punched that grip,” Tony Alva asked OG Dagger Eddie Reategui. “Yeah, I remember punching some other big guy, and he didn't even go down,” Reategui wistfully reminisced.

Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris stood nearby records in hand, his dreadlocks nearly touching the ground. He had just spun some classics for the crowd mixed of old school skaters like Christian Hosoi, new school artists, and a handful of actors gathered for the classy event.

Also mingling with the leather jacket, tight jean-clad crowd was Scout Taylor-Compton, the actress who will channel the energy of Lita Ford for the upcoming teen flick, The Runaways. Working alongside Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and writer/director Floria Sigismondi was no sweat she said: “I never worked with a woman director before. I worked with Rob [Zombie] last time [on Halloween], so it was really comfortable to work with Floria.”

In addition to working with Sigismondi, Taylor-Compton said that Joan Jett was often on set: “She's a legend.”

The legends of skateboarding seemed comfortable at this reunion. It wasn't a media moment, and didn't seem too manufactured. It was a reunion like any other, the Daggers held drinks (their tattooed hands revealing much more ink than the Thrashin' days), and gave bro-hugs the way dudes do when they haven't seen eachother in ages. Even though the Dagger night had Twilight connections (Catherine Hardwicke could have been a Twi-hard magnet), most of the crowd were interested in swapping stories with the original skateboarding heroes.
