Fans of tiki culture, Exotica music, pin-up and mid-century modern aesthetics will be happy to know that L.A. now has its own festival of tropical frolic and fun in EXOTIKON. With the inaugural event, Peekaboo Gallery’s Jordan Reicheki hopes to provide a  “theme park of escapism throwing the event at Wisdome LA, the Downtown, multi-domed art park this weekend.

Each dome will offer different amusements including live music (Mambo Diabolico, Tikiyaki Orchestra, The  Hula Girls and more); DJs; burlesque and cosplay fashion shows; symposiums, rum tastings, and a vendor village with vintage art, furniture and clothing.

There will also be meet n’ greets with Shag, and Polynesian Pop auction featuring rarities from the Yma Sumac estate. Sumac, of course, was queen of Exotica– the mid-50s genre incorporating exotic rhythms, especially of the South Seas.

Of course, Tiki Oasis in San Diego (coming Aug.2-5) has had these types of amusements covered for decades, but for this scene, which is all about nostalgic excess in dress, dance and drink, more is definitely merrier, especially for Angelenos. Exotikon tickets available for single day or 3-day passes, which grant access to all activities within the festival.
