International Pop Overthrow Returns to the Redwood: IPO is a touring festival that sees a massive selection of pop/power-pop/rock & roll bands carefully placed on a series of, honestly, quite spectacular bills at the intimate Redwood. This year’s event kicks off on Friday with a night headlined by Chris Price and also featuring Rock Hromadka, Jason Berk & the Jerks, the Bings, Adrian Bourgois, and David Philp. And that’s just the first night! Check out the listings and pick at least one — it’s well worth the effort.

"Each International Pop Overthrow features between 25-180 of the best pop bands from around the world," they say online. "Everyone from the bands to the spectators has a wonderful time, and although we’re all exhausted by the end, we part company with one prevailing thought: 'I can’t wait to do it again next year!' The purpose of International Pop Overthrow is two-fold: one aim is to give every worthy band who’d like to play their music in a festival atmosphere the chance to do so, and the other is to bring pop music the attention it so richly deserves. We have made great strides to that end, garnering press in several noteworthy papers and blogs in each city in which we hold the festival, and creating a very positive buzz about pop music within the independent music community. In addition, every artist who plays the festival feels as if they’re part of something fulfilling, being on bills with like-minded artists with whom they can bond, and playing in front of an audience who will 'get' their music."

Attendees get a CD with the entrance fee while stocks last. We reviewed the event last year and said, "Ultimately, we can sit here all day and list bands that performed at IPO 2022, or that appear on the new album. But the reality is that it’s all good. Get the CDs and, for god’s sake, make sure you attend one of the shows in the future." That still holds true.

International Pop Overthrow Returns to the Redwood: The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 4 through Saturday, August 12 at the Redwood.
