Jonathan Washington Dead, Edgar Cortez Arrested after DUI Crash on US Highway 80 East [Sunnyvale, TX]

34-Year-Old Driver Killed in Wrong-Way Collision near Lawson Road

SUNNYVALE, TX (December 17, 2024)Jonathan Washington died early Sunday morning, in a DUI collision on US Highway 80 near Lawson Road.

Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 2:30 a.m., on December 1st.

According to investigators, Cortez was driving west in the eastbound lanes when he collided with a Dodge Challenger occupied by Washington.

Despite life-saving efforts, 34-year-old Washington succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Washington was known for his active involvement in youth sports in the Mesquite area and was an employee at Baylor Dallas.

After an initial investigation, police arrested 22-year-old Cortez, charging him with intoxication manslaughter. He is currently being held at the Mesquite City Jail on a $252,000 bond.
