Two Fatalities Reported after Multi-Vehicle Collision near Riggs Road

SUN LAKES, AZ (November 6, 2024)José Guillermo Castellanos González and Efrain Gutiérrez-Ávila died Wednesday afternoon, in a multi-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 10.

Around 12:00 p.m., dispatchers received calls near Riggs Road on the westbound lanes of the freeway on October 16th.

Arizona DPS reports that a crash involving a two-axle box truck, a pickup truck, and three additional vehicles occurred on a westbound roadway. According to investigators, the box truck did not slow down in time, leading to a collision with the pickup and the three other vehicles.

Following the impact, both the box truck and the pickup truck caught fire. Despite rescue efforts, the drivers of these two trucks were pronounced deceased at the scene, later identified as 53-year-old González and 62-year-old Gutierrez-Ávila.

Two drivers from the other vehicles sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The collision prompted troopers to close all lanes on the interstate between Riggs and Casa Blanca roads for several hours. The lanes reopened around 6:30 p.m. as the investigation continued.
