COSTA MESA, CA (February 4, 2025) – Oscar Axael Macias was fatally struck early Sunday morning, in a pursuit collision on 22nd Avenue.
The incident began around 2:45 a.m., at the Santiago Drive and Holiday Road intersection in Newport Beach.
According to reports, the authorities spotted three individuals attempting to steal a vehicle. The three suspects then fled the scene and ended up in Costa Mesa.
However, the chase ended shortly after the suspect’s white Lexus sedan crashed into a power pole at the 22nd Street and Santa Ana Avenue intersection.
Paramedics transported the driver – Anthony Rodolfo Samayoa, 20 – to hospital.
Meanwhile, crews sent Samayoa to Costa Mesa jail for DUI, vehicular homicide, and attempted vehicle theft.
His backseat passenger, identified as 21-year-old Sergio Avalos of Carson, was hospitalized and eventually arrested. Avalos is arrested for suspicion of GTA and felony conspiracy.
The third suspect, identified as 20-year-old Oscar Axael Macias, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Investigators later determined that the three suspects were from Carson. The Costa Mesa police’s Major Accident Investigations Team is leading the investigation.
