MADERA COUNTY, CA (November 8, 2023) – Teresa Freyear and Karima Buitron lost their lives Friday night in a high-speed accident on Highway 99. Emergency responders were alerted to the incident at approximately 8:05 p.m., as it occurred in the northbound lanes of the freeway just north of Highway 152.
According to initial reports, the accident involved 19-year-old Karima Buitron, who was driving an older model Toyota Camry at excessive speeds, carrying four female passengers who were all without their seatbelts fastened.
Shortly thereafter, Buitron was unable to navigate a turn, leading to a loss of control over the vehicle, causing it to swerve onto the east shoulder. The Camry collided with a light pole and subsequently overturned. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced both Buitron and 20-year-old Freyear deceased.
Preliminary investigations suggest that impairment may have played a role in the accident. An ongoing active inquiry is currently underway to ascertain the full details of the incident.
