What is it that makes a fantasy world captivating? Is it the dragons soaring through crimson skies or the mystical forests echoing with whispers of ancient magic? While these elements certainly enchant us, the true magic lies in the craft of world-building.
A well-crafted fantasy work is like a piece of art where each brushstroke represents one intricate detail, whether it’s culture, geography, history, or the captivating realm of mythology. Just as each stroke brings the canvas to life, so does each detail in a fantasy world enhance its immersive quality.
This crucial element of fantasy writing doesn’t simply shape the story. Still, it whisks readers off their feet and transports them into a whole new universe, so detailed that they can lose themselves in it and utterly forget the one they left behind.
One author who has, time and time again, demonstrated an uncanny ability to create such intricate worlds is JD Netto. The universes in Netto’s works are not just imaginative planes but kingdoms and dimensions that grip the reader from the first page to the last.
For Netto, crafting engaging but complex worlds is not a mere element of his writing but the spine that holds the stories together. “The heart of a novel lies in its plot, but the soul resides in its world.”
Each world he constructs is rooted in its unique mythology, customs, traditions, and lore. They’re the lifeblood that pulses through each universe, breathing a sense of authenticity into each of Netto’s creations. Yet, as he explains, to remain believable and capture the hearts of readers, each literary dimension must have the ability to transform in sync with the characters that reside in them.
“Just like our world isn’t static, neither should those in fantasy stories. They should be allowed to evolve and change, side-by-side with the protagonists, and even the antagonists,” Netto highlights.
Achieving this is far more complex than meets the eye. World-building and character development, two driving forces of any literary genre, become incredibly challenging in fantasy. As Netto explains, thorough research, a keen understanding of mythology, and a deep dive into the very core of the human soul form the pillars that keep the foundations of any fantasy book unshakeable.
Suppose one wishes to craft an authentic and believable universe and storyline. In that case, one must be prepared for hours upon hours of research and be willing to go into the depth of, at times, dubious subjects to form these foundations.
“I have to admit that it can get frustrating at times. Creating your mythology can be a tedious process. You want to rely on what’s known, but, at the same time, you want to avoid ideas that have been done repeatedly,” Netto shares. “If you wish to pique readers’ interests, you have to strike a balance between what they are familiar with and what they would love to see.”
Through his books, such as Henderbell and The Echoes of Fallen Stars: Immortal Crowns, Netto has achieved this balance perfectly. The dimensions he has built are as tangible and complex as our own― a feat Netto has achieved by skillfully relating to politics, human relationships, diplomacy, and present and past customs.
Another striking feature of Netto’s characters, in particular, is the fact that each brilliantly mirrors the subtleties and nuances of the people around us, exploring subjects such as identity and sexuality without placing them as the focal point of the narrative. In doing so, Netto has achieved an artful harmony in character portrayal, making them as alive as we all are.
Since the early days of his career, JD Netto has certainly taken contemporary fantasy fiction to new heights, raising the bar for other authors in the genre. By approaching every detail with care and weaving extraordinary mythologies into his stories, the universes he creates grow and evolve with each page one turns.
Looking ahead, he is still teeming with ideas and delighted to keep exploring his existing universes and spark new ones. As he says, “Every stroke of the pen is a step into the unknown. The joy of creating worlds, of giving life to characters, is an adventure that never ceases to thrill me.”
